Communication for Learning

Updated: Mar 3

Never be afraid to admit you don’t know something. So many people stay stuck because they’re afraid to ask questions. Asking questions is important in communication. No one knows everything. What you should be afraid of is not seeking out the answers. If you’re not sure about something, or just don’t know entirely, be inquisitive and find out. How else can you grow? Everyone has to start somewhere.

This is one hang-up (of many) that I have with organized religion. Questioning the doctrine is often frowned upon. Asking questions and not accepting based on blind faith is looked down on. Even if you’re not disagreeing with the status quo and want clarification, religious leaders often get upset. (I’ll be fair and admit not all are like this, but the rare few that encourage questioning are few and far in between.)

Any organization that speaks out against questioning the doctrine should be avoided. Questioning things is the basis for learning! Questions are the building blocks of invention and innovations. If we didn’t ask how birds fly, we wouldn’t have planes. If we didn’t ask how we can move faster, we’d be walking everywhere instead of riding horses, then creating cars. If we hadn’t asked how to make fire for ourselves, we would still be living in the stone ages!

Don’t feel dumb asking for information you don’t currently have. Most people are delighted to share what they know, just as you are when someone asks you a question about something you’re an expert in.

I often speak on the importance of communication on this site and on social media, and when it comes to educating yourself, communication is most definitely key. Ask questions. You’ll find people are eager to help and share. The type of information you seek out can lead you to new friendships and connections. Your shared interest in a topic or subject can open doors to new opportunities you would not have even thought about before.

The reverse is true as well. Don’t be afraid to make space where you can communicate what you know. This allows you to share your information, can teach you how much of it you actually know, and show you how well you can explain your topics of interest. Working on your communication skills in this manner can teach you about yourself as well. Great places to start are Twitter and YouTube.

Never be afraid to ask the questions that you do not know. Communicating knowledge is how we have progressed as a society. Even when certain knowledge that was forbidden in the past people found a way to communicate them to those who truly wanted to learn it. Communication and knowledge go hand in hand. Share what you know and ask what you want to know.

Thank you for reading, and have an enlightening day!
