Completion: The Benefits of Finishing The Things You Keep Putting Off.

We’ve all got those things we put off until the last minute. There’s the dishes in the sink, the basket of clean clothes we need to put up, that term paper that’s due in the morning, making that reservation for dinner, or filing taxes. A lot of us know we should be getting it done, but we keep procrastinating and putting it off until we absolutely have to. Sometimes, some of us still don’t do it at all and create messes for ourselves that could’ve been avoided with just a little bit of early work.

Completing things will do a lot more for you than just freeing up your time or resources. It also helps you mentally. There’s multiple ways this happens so this week in Deeper Thoughts let’s go over a few things that happen once you complete those things you’ve been putting off.

It relieves stress. We all know how it can feel when we have too much going on. Gotta clean the house, meet that deadline at work, get the kids signed up for their after school activities, and so on. After a while it piles up and makes you feel overwhelmed. Getting these things done removes those burdens and lets you breathe easier. It lets you take that weight off your shoulders because the thoughts of what you’re putting off isn’t looming over your shoulder like some sort of ghost.

A prime example is our cleaning the house. Once you’ve put up the laundry and dishes, swept and dusted, mopped, put up everything that’s strewn around in its proper place, all those things, you feel calmer. This is because removing all that clutter and mess you’ve been putting off cleared up space and allowed better flow of energy. You feel like you can breathe easier now.

It allows us to free up our time for other activities or to take a much needed rest. When you have multiple things to do that have multiple deadlines, and you tend to wait till the last minute to do them, you’ll be constantly interrupted when you’re trying to do something fun, but the deadline for one of those projects or responsibilities is coming up. You have to stop what you’re in the middle of, finish that task, then go back to what you were previously doing.

This is especially frustrating when you’re finally trying to complete one task, but they’re all overlapping with when they’re due, causing you to hop back and forth between them. Completing them gives you more free time without interruptions to enjoy the things you want, be they hanging out with friends, playing games, or just taking some alone time to catch up on rest and recharging your batteries.

A lot of times fear and self confidence issues prevent us from completing tasks.  We don't think we're up to the challenge. You don’t think your term paper will be good enough, or you think you’re not fit to deliver that sales pitch in that important business meeting. When you’ve prepped for them you’re much more confident in yourself going in, and that confidence is boosted when it’s over because at the end of the day, YOU DID IT!

This boost in confidence doesn’t have to be from something like the big sales pitch mentioned above. It can be something small, like figuring out how to clear out that clog in your sink after multiple failed attempts with Liquid Plumber, or putting that lawn mower tire on yourself.

When you complete tasks well before the last minute, it will show others, and yourself, that you can be counted on to do what you say you will do. While this is important with everyone, it's especially important for men. When we say we're going to do something, we need to do it.

This confidence you're instilling in yourself by completing the things you’re putting off gives you the courage to start new things and get out of your comfort zone. It helps you grow as a person.

So finish those things you've been putting off today and get ready for fresh starts that come afterwards! Complete the cycles and tasks you’re stuck in so you can level up, and expand who you are!

Thank you for reading, and as always, have an enlightening day.
