Welcome back everyone! Last week we started with our overview of the elements with the foundational element of earth. This week, now that we're better grounded in ourselves, we’re going to move on up to the element of air.
Why is air the second elemental grade in Western Ceremonial Magick? Air represents thought. Just like when the air is clear we can see better, so are our thoughts. Once we’re centered in the earth element we can we use our thought to see the bigger picture and assess what moves we need to make next.
In life we can’t have our thoughts running wild like a crazy hurricane. We have to have control over them. Our thoughts are not us. They are separate from us. We are the observer of them. We have to learn to step back and look in on them. It is through our thoughts that we are able to respond to the situations life throws at us instead of reacting to them. It’s through this mental clarity we work toward that we can see things from multiple angles.
We take the time to master our thoughts so we can maneuver and work through our emotions in the elemental grade of water. Our emotions can be a swirling ocean of chaos if we don’t have the proper mindset to process them.
The air is represented in Tarot by the suit of swords. A sharp mind is like a sharp sword, cutting through the foggy air to create clarity. The sharp mind is a dangerous weapon to wield. How many times in your life has keeping a clear head saved you from a dangerous situation? How many times has a sharp mind given you an edge against an opponent?
The element of air is a masculine energy. Before anyone can get upset, I’m not saying women are not capable of clear thought and decision making. What I am saying is that while every person is different, men are typically more thought oriented, and women are more emotionally oriented. Women nurture the emotions, while men lead with mental clarity.
Just like the other elements, Air is represented in astrology. In Western and Vedic we have the air signs Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius.
All things begin with the mind. Our thoughts are the start of our manifestations. When we’re trapped in negative thought patterns we remain in lower frequencies, and thus the universe will reflect that back to us in our lives. As we master our thoughts we are able to work through the higher elemental grades and raise our vibrations.
But much like the swords in the Tarot, the mind is double edged. While our thoughts are able to lift us up out of a dark place, when used improperly we can create more problems for ourselves. Without proper control, we can delude ourselves into not seeing reality for what it really is.
Working with the element of air will lead you to seeing things from multiple perspectives. It will have you learning many new things, but will also have you unlearning much as well. It can help you see your own traumas. It helps us see our detrimental patterns and what our own toxic tendencies are. It helps us learn who we are and how we can align with who we want to be. It can help us see when we’re being manipulated. Air helps us to expand our awareness.
The element of air can give you the mental clarity of a master swordsman, able to cut your way through the fog of all that can cloud your mind. Thank you once again for reading this overview of Air. I look forward to seeing you next week when we go over the element of Water. Take care, and have an enlightening day!
